CBSE Class 10 Social Science (SST) is a four-domain subject combining History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics. It is also, for many students, the subject where careless preparation costs the most marks. Students who invest focused study time in SST consistently manage to push their overall CBSE aggregate up significantly — marks that can make a real difference for high-scoring goals. This article gives a smart, structured study plan for each domain.
History: Understanding Over Memorisation
Class 10 History covers five chapters: The Rise of Nationalism in Europe, Nationalism in India, The Making of a Global World, The Age of Industrialisation, and Print Culture and the Modern World. CBSE History questions test conceptual understanding and the ability to explain causes and consequences — not just names and dates.
Study each chapter by focusing on the main theme (why did this happen? what were the consequences?), key terms, and important events. CBSE History papers always include a 5-mark "Explain" or "Describe" question per chapter — practice writing these paragraph answers in 5 to 7 sentences.
Geography: Maps Are Non-Negotiable
Class 10 Geography covers Resources and Development, Forest and Wildlife, Water Resources, Agriculture, Minerals and Energy Resources, Manufacturing Industries, and Lifelines of National Economy. Geography has a dedicated map-based question section in the Board paper worth 5 marks — these marks are entirely within reach but only if you practice map questions regularly.
Political Science: Know the Key Concepts
Class 10 Political Science covers Power Sharing, Federalism, Democracy and Diversity, Gender, Religion and Caste, and Political Parties. This domain rewards students who can apply concepts to examples. CBSE PST questions typically ask you to "distinguish between," "explain with examples," or "identify from the given description" — all requiring conceptual clarity rather than verbatim memorisation. Practice application-type questions for each chapter.
Economics: Data Interpretation and Concepts
Class 10 Economics covers Development, Sectors of the Indian Economy, Money and Credit, Globalisation and the Indian Economy, and Consumer Rights. Economics questions often include data interpretation components — reading a table or graph and drawing inferences. Practice these specifically, as students who are unprepared for data questions lose marks unnecessarily. The conceptual questions in Economics are relatively straightforward if the chapter is read carefully.
The Combined SST Strategy
Divide your SST preparation into four equal blocks — one per domain. Cover each chapter in each domain at least twice before the Board exam: once for understanding and once for revision.
- Write out 5-mark answer-length paragraphs for each chapter's likely essay questions.
- Practice map items daily for at least two weeks before the exam.
- Use CBSE previous year papers for the last five years to identify recurring question patterns.
- For Economics, practise at least three data interpretation questions per chapter.
- For Political Science, practise application questions for each chapter — not just definitions.
